Walkabout Hounds Training Classes, Lessons & Dog Care
All training techniques used by Walkabout Hounds are kind, fair and reward based. Class sizes are kept to a minimum (8 maximum), to provide individual tuition and a relaxed environment. Classes are designed to be fun and rewarding for both dog and owner but in the interest of safety, responsibility and welfare it is important that the following terms and conditions are noted.
1. Harsh handling is not permitted in class and is strongly discouraged at any other time. James and Davina are Members of The Guild of Dog Trainers and Working Towards Accreditation with The Kennel Club. They run their classes in accordance with their Code of Practice. As such; choke chains, check chains, prong collars, punitive methods and manhandling are not allowed in classes.
2. Owners are expected to clean up after their dogs in and around the training venue. Please ensure you come to class suitably prepared with pooh bags to clean up any dog mess. All dogs must be kept under control and on a lead. Please do not feed your dog up to 3 hours before class.
3. Walkabout Hounds does not restrict the number of family members that are allowed to class (the more the merrier) and children are more than welcome. However, young people under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult and should not be left to bring the dog to classes on their own. Young children under the age of five are also welcome a second adult should also attend to enable one adult to concentrate on the child and the other with the puppy.
4. Please do not bring your dog to class if he or she has been in contact with another dog infected by a contagious disease. We also ask that bitches in season are not brought to class. If you are unsure whether or not to bring your dog to class please do not hesitate to call James or Davina or speak with your Veterinary surgeon. If a dog is unable to attend classes, owners are more than welcome to attend without their dog in order to keep up to date with the training course.
5. Refunds cannot be given after a course has started. Exceptional circumstances will be considered on an individual basis. Walkabout Hounds requires 7 days notification of cancellation of a place on a training course. If canceling within 7 days of the course start date a refund can only be made if the place is filled prior to the start of the course but an administration fee of £30 will be charged.
Fees and Prices:
· The full course fee must be paid in advance of joining the class. Failure to pay in a timely fashion may result in your place on the course being given to another client.
· Price advertised at time of booking applies.
· Payments accepted are cash, debit cards, credit cards, American Express, Bank Transfer, Cheque (Walkabout Hounds must be consulted first for all cheque payments and must have cleared before classes commence).
Training Class Attendance:
· Our courses consist of 8 weekly classes, rather than random attendance. The classes will be the same day and time for each course. For optimum results, we hope that you will attend all the classes and complete the course.
· To make the most of the classes and achieve optimal results, many short daily training sessions at home are favourable to allow you and your dog to practice the techniques and lessons prior to the next class.
· Dogs must be vaccinated. Your vet will advise when it is safe for your puppy to attend. If you are unsure about vaccinations please consult your vet directly. This is for the safety of your puppy and therefore no exceptions can be made. It is your responsibility to have your puppy vaccinated. We do accept Titre Tests for dogs over 1 year of age.
· Occasionally, we may find that a class environment does not suit a dog or owner. Full discussion over the best way to proceed will be undertaken and this may result in us making alternative arrangements to assist you.
· All children must be under the supervision of a responsible adult who must agree to prevent them from disturbing the process of learning during the class. Trainers reserve the right to ask disruptive children not to attend future classes. Children under 5 years of age may attend only at the discretion of the tutor.
· Although we make every effort to allow your dogs to play with other suitable dogs in the class for short periods, we cannot guarantee the right mix of dogs on every course for this to be done safely. Consequently, dog or puppy play may not occur in all classes. Please do not allow your dogs to play on the lead.
· We make every effort to ensure safety of both clients and puppies during the classes. By making a booking, you are accepting that participating in an activity with puppies, dogs, children and adults poses a risk of injury to yourself and your dog, and you agree to indemnify Walkabout Hounds for all personal injury and damage to property owned by you while attending the training classes. You also agree to make any person who accompanies you to the class aware that they are also there at their own risk.
· Missed classes cannot usually be taken by joining another group run by the tutor at the appropriate time as there may not be spare places. However from Beginners Stage 1 one off changes may be made at the discretion of the trainer.
· Walkabout Hounds method of training relies heavily on rewards with food treats, toys and verbal praise. Although we do have some treats available at the class, it is important to bring with you a supply of tasty, smelly food treats that your dog will work hard for and is used to.
Training Class / Centre Rules:
· All dogs must remain on lead and kept away from contact with other dogs within the premises unless specifically instructed by the tutor.
· All instances of accident or injury must be reported to the tutor at the time they occurred.
· Harnesses are not encouraged in class as they can be a distraction during training and are sometimes dangerous in play. Exceptions will be made where a harness has been recommended by your veterinary surgeon for health reasons. In these cases, it would be useful for owners to supply a letter from their veterinary surgeon as to the nature of the puppy’s condition since this may be relevant to various exercises in class, such as puppy play.
· Flexi leads are not permitted in class to avoid injury to others.
· The following items are NOT PERMITTED in classes under any circumstances: choker chains and/or check chains of any description; electronic training collars including citronella; any other device that causes discomfort, pain or fear to the puppy; prong or pinch collars; any equipment that the trainer deems unacceptable.
· The use of physical force and punishment-based training techniques are not permitted in any of Walkabout Hounds classes.
Refunds and Cancellations:
· Because we operate our classes using a very low tutor:puppy ratio, refunds may not be given for any cancellations unless at least 7 DAYS NOTICE is given. There are no exceptions. We may be able to transfer or defer your place to another course but this is at the discretion of Walkabout Hounds and dependent on the age of your dog at the start of the next available course. Failure to notify us of a cancellation within this time frame will result in no refund.
· Failure to attend a course that you have booked a place on, but not yet paid for, will result in a request for full payment, which you agree to be liable for.
· There will be no partial refunds for missed classes. All other cancellation and refund requests are at the discretion of Walkabout Hounds and dependent on individual circumstances.
